Ian
Below is the letter that Aunt Meg got from Ian, along with Aunt Meg's notes! I was hoping that all of you could write something (in the comment section) and I will pull them all off and send it to Ian. With Thanksgiving and Christmas coming, I'm sure Ian would love to hear from EVERYONE. Love, Aunt Deb, MOM or just plain Deb
Dear All,
Finally got 2 letters from the Marine Corp. The letters are typed forms, sent to all the families – no personal word at all. I am retyping the letter below so you have all the info I have:
November 9, 2008
Dear ________________, (Ian filled in “Megan Deichl” – no ‘mom’ for me!)
I have arrived safely at MCRD San Diego, CA and have been assigned to my training platoon, Platoon 3249 with Lima Company. There are over 85 other recruits from various parts of the country here, but we are now all one team.
We have 2 Drill Instructors and 1 Senior Drill Instructor that are with us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I request that you do not send parcels of food or candy. I am on a strict, balanced, and nutritious diet. We get three meals a day so don’t worry. Other items you shouldn’t send our (yep, not ‘are’ – the Marine reputation for not the sharpest guys in the world – lingers on.) vitamins, alcohol, any pornographic material, gambling devices, tobacco products and combustibles. No need to send clothing either. I’ve been issued anything that I may need to keep warm.
Out graduation is scheduled for January 30, 2009. Remember to keep in touch about travel arrangements throughout my time here in recruit training. Here is my new address, please address my mail exactly as it is here to prevent delay.
Recruit ___Faunt, IJ______ (Not positive about the 'J', Ian wrote it in - may be a 'T'?)
3rd BN Lima Co. Plt 3249
39000 Midway Ave.
San Diego, CA 92140-3249
I apologize that this letter is short. In the beginning we are somewhat pressed for time. I promise to write later.
Sincerely,
Ian J Faunt (As always, he has to put 'Faunt' or I might not know who it is)
The other letter is a form letter from his Staff Sergeant Rodriguez - his Senior Drill Instructor. I am late for work, so I will send that to you later. Just wanted to get you his address so you can write him.
Megan
